What is the best way to set a mousetrap?

I have a plague of mice and I'm using "Little Nipper" mouse traps in a attempt to reduce the problem. I put over the socket and took one with peanut butter. I realized three of the traps had eaten peanut butter from their traps and did not die. Why? Could it be because the mouse is too small or just the trick? Which is the best way to set these traps? What is the best bait used to ensure that you can not chew and run? Thank you very much, this is a big problem if the help is greatly appreciated.
