White Skin and Dark Brown Hair Long

Growing up in the Philippines, I have always been exposed to the idea of colonial mentality. See, we have been colonized by Spain, United States and other countries before reaching our own independence. So basically being "white" would be cool. Or rich. Or important. Or what all wanted to be.

Everyone ogled when they saw a white man in the street. People thought you were someone important given that friends or go out with one. And if in fact are "half" or related to someone from another country, well, you are above everyone else.

I have friends around the world. I have found in different parts and stages of my life and we are so different from each other as a Benetton ad. If there is anything I really aware of all the people who are now part of my life, but not necessarily live close to me is that everyone is equal. We all made of the same elements. Verify that each culture is different, but if you open and his eyes and his home, the heart of Heck, you see that the person who speaks a different language completely different from yours can be your own soul mate. Anyone, regardless color of skin or dark hair, has dreams and frustrations, and the theater with their boyfriends or girlfriends, and secrets. Everyone has a story to share.

I choose my friends, not their skin color, or exotic as its emphasis is mine, but by how they treat me, how they treat others the way we hear, by their values and outlook on life. I do not care if you look like a model that is out of track, Ralph Lauren or forgotten what a razor Once you have backpacking around the islands of the Philippines and Europe. I do not care, even if you can write a paragraph in perfect English or can only speak straight Tagalog.

I know some people only want to have a foreign friend. Or a boyfriend abroad. Is well, I understand. I feel great. But at the end of the day you see someone is not what they seem, but for what they are. It's sharing a joke or a language that both can understand. It is knowing that are not beyond physical matter and you know the things you see on the outside really does not say much about what's in your heart.

The curious is that the people I'm closer to living further away from me. Thank God for the Internet to make them feel closer. But it is understood in a society where people think they're different only because it is mixed with people from another country can be frustrating. It's like sometimes treats me like a stranger. If people can not relate me. The truth is I'm like everyone else.

I'm Elaine. I am a Filipina. I have tanned skin and long dark brown hair. I know that if you love me only because you think that this combination seems exotic. I can spot a shit. I am a mixture of where I grew and all the other new places I call home now. I let and given pieces of my heart to people who may never see and I brought with me. I know that when we love for what I am. And I know when I love you too, not what you like, but what you are.

WHAT I AM saying that it really is, I hope people can pass for white skin or any trace of the colonial mentality, how others see them. That French guy sitting next to Burger King loves you as much as you. Slippers that Australia is more often as you do. South Africa walk the streets? It can Balot eat as much, probably more, as you can in one sitting.

Seeing beyond the skin and be proud of who you are.
